Funny Picture Books Need Golden Hearts

I love the Children’s Book Academy. I just finished a month-long workshop on writing picture books and learned so much. Some manuscripts I need to revise one more time are humorous and that is important, because everyone loves funny stories (especially me,) but the best humorous tales offer a deeper layer, like the finish on a fine wine.

Write a Poem about Laughter

On day 7 of NaPoWriMo, Donna Sadd requests the pleasure of your laughter poem.

#NaPoWriMo – Day 7 – Laughter – #Kids | Donna L Sadd.

Here’s mine:

Laughter

When my father
was young,
he went to work
painting backgrounds
for animated gels
in a cartoon studio,
The first day
he sat in on a session
of daily rushes,
giggling helplessly
at the gags
until the other
artists turned
around to glare
at the fool who
thought their
work was funny,
funny, isn’t it
how easily we
all forget what
we are really
doing here?

Entry guidelines:

The Greenhouse Funny prize is open to un-agented writers writing funny fiction for children of all ages.

To get a good sense of the voice and where the character is headed, we’d like to see the first 5,000 words PLUS a short description (a few lines) of the book AND a one page outline that…
