2012 November PAD Chapbook Challenge: Day 8 : Poetic Asides • Page 2 • Writing Forum | WritersDigest.com

Robert Brewer’s poetry prompt today is brilliant. It could inspire a whole book.

Write an answer to a question or provocative statement posed by a dead poet.

Isn’t that great? Because posting comments to his blog can be challenging (a nonsensical error message pops up), he is setting up a separate thread for each day’s poems on the WD forum.

Forgive me, but I am really proud of the one I came up with today! You can find it, and responses from other members of our community by following the link below. Don’t forget to post your own, too. I’ve posted my poem below the link here if you want to read it without clicking.

Mar-ga-ret, Gerard Has Just Forgotten

Mar-ga-ret
the man has
been inside
too long
to remember
the joys
of running
barefoot in dewy
July grass
under the long
sun or swimming
in a mild pond
with laughing
friends who
don’t want anything
but fun. He
sees you crying
as leaves
fall down
and tries to stop
your tears
with a flood
of verbal invention,
but he even
makes your name
fall a syllable
at a time
like leaf-meal
flutter. Go ahead
and grieve, child.
Then, stand
outside, open
your mouth
catch snowflakes
on your tongue.

2012 November PAD Chapbook Challenge: Day 5 | Text Message Poems | WritersDigest.com

Today’s prompt is a little different. It challenges you to write a text message poem. Unfortunately, I am really cheap. My emergency cell phone does not include a data package, so I don’t text. Mine might be kind of strange. You can probably do better, but it’s one of my writing warm-ups for this month. Check out the other entries on Brewer’s Poetic Asides blog. The link is below, followed by my text message tale (yes, it is a story).

2012 November PAD Chapbook Challenge: Day 4 | Just Beneath Poems | WritersDigest.com

Today’s prompt on the Poetic Asides blog is “Just beneath…” If you need an idea for any sort of work, that’s a good start.

To read the many interpretations of that inspiration in Brewer’s community, click on the link below. You can also add your own.

2012 November PAD Chapbook Challenge: Day 4 | Just Beneath Poems | WritersDigest.com.

Here’s mine:

Just beneath

the surface

like a spawning

fish at the edge

of a summer

pond, something

pushes and

nudges. Fecund

and implacable

as a black hole,

it takes all

in. What

comes next?

I hold

my breath.

2012 November PAD Chapbook Challenge: Day 3 | Scary Poems | WritersDigest.com

Today, the challenge on the Poetic Asides Blog was to write a poem that scares you.

Read the responses on the blog and add one of your own. The link is below.

Here’s mine:

It

had not

taken form

and remained

a threat

without outline

in thin light

between night

and dawn.

Some sensed

it, an off scent

in the air

an odd buzz

in the near

silence

and their efforts

to reason

with their pounding

hearts were

driving them

mad. It was

not easy

as once

it had been

and something

undeniable

was coming

slowly

closer.

Now I have caught up with the group! I will only do one a day until the end of the month or until I run out of steam whichever comes first.

Blue Moon: A Full Moon Poem for PAD, 2012

Here’s my Day 2 entry in the Poem a Day Challenge for 2012.

The prompt was “Full Moon.”

  • Blue Moon

    It was still summer
    and still a little
    too hot to be
    out at noon
    here in the
    high desert
    of Colorado.
    We woke early
    and drove up
    to the edge
    of the city
    just below the place
    where the valley
    evaporates against
    the sudden edge
    of the Uncompahgre
    Plateau. Over
    the blue Grand Mesa
    to our right,
    the golden sun
    was rising, while
    to our left, over
    crimson cliffs,
    the blue moon,
    proud and full,
    was going down.
    In silence, we
    stood still
    beside our little
    car and felt
    the inexorable
    turning
    of the Earth.

  • We’re a match,
    the two of us,
    you with your
    temper and me
    too tempered
    you with your
    careful pacing
    and me
    with my wild
    last minute
    dashes.
    We’re a match
    of seeming
    opposites, seamed
    so closely together
    that sometimes
    there is no space
    between us
    like sky
    and sea at
    sunset on the
    Pacific.

Wednesday Poetry Prompts: 197 | WritersDigest.com

A while back I posted a link to an essay about the question “Where do you get your ideas?”

Today’s prompt on Robert Lee Brewer’s poetry blog was to write a poem in answer to a question. Here’s mine, followed by a link to Brewer’s blog. He has a new prompt each week.

Ideas

They come
unbidden,
pouring through
cracks in consciousness,
spilling into quiet
afternoons.
breaking down
dams of resolve,
dripping like
springs
down mossy
corners at the back
of my mind.
They wet
my hair and leave
me shivering
in the middle
of the night.
No towel
can absorb
their insistence
until I sit down
and let them
flow into
form.
Where do
I get them?
I wish
I knew.

Daily News from Poets & Writers

Poets and Writers is a great organization for literary workers. I learned about the market for literary short stories and poetry through Coda, their original newsletter. Without them, I would not have had my poems published in such fine journals. I am proud to be included in their juried list.

You do not have to be listed, however, to receive Poets and Writers, their current magazine, or to access the many excellent resources on their site. Here’s their news page. If you are a poet, bookmark it and visit often. Also, check out their market listings. Fall is a great time to submit work.
